Classically-trained violinist turned singer-producer Kylian approaches pop music with the sensuality of a hedonist and the devotion of a priest. Drawing upon orchestral and electronic influences, with generous swaths of layered horns, synths and strings shimmering over emphatic, primal beats and the delicate urgency of her voice, her songs are richly orchestrated and vivd with longing.
Though she began her violin studies at the age of six, it was always the wildness and mystery of the natural world that captivated her attention. Pouring over her parents' Natural Geographic collection and exploring the woods around her childhood home in rural Tennessee, Kylian decided early on that music would serve primarily as a vehicle for adventure. Guided by that intention, her musical versatility and flexibility afforded her opportunities to perform opera in Italy, tour Pakistan with a string quartet and Germany with a Bollywood Circus, and cultivate an active career as a studio musician and performer in New York for artists such as Chairlift, Lady Lamb, Wet, and The Album Leaf.
It wasn't until a masterclass with contemporary classical/electronic violinist Todd Reynolds (Meredith Monk, Steve Reich), however, that Kylian was introduced to the expressive possibilities of electronic production, and turned her focus towards creating sounds that evoked the expansive, verdant landscapes of her childhood fascination.
The process of making her debut EP We Are Ready was guided by grammy-winning producer and engineer Jeremy Loucas (Esperanza Spalding, Lulu Gainsbourg, Xenia Rubinos), in the intermittent hours between his professional commitments. This eighteen-month incubation period enabled her to meticulously sculpt, and often rework many times over every sound on the record herself.
Concurrently, KYLIAN lent her production and songwriting skills to Kansas City- based contemporary ballet company Quixotic, creating new work for several productions and performing songs from We Are Ready at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater for 9,000 people.
"I don’t know much about the artist behind Kylian but what I can say is that if this track is any hint at what’s to come, she’s definitely going to be an artist to keep your eyes on."
"....it's bold, it’s original, and it definitely sticks out..."
